Electrician vs. Plumber vs. HVAC: Comparing Trade Career Paths

    March 3, 2026

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports median annual wages of $61,590 for electricians, $60,090 for plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters, and $57,300 for HVAC mechanics and installers as of 2023. All three trades are projected to grow faster than the national average through 2032, driven by infrastructure investment, green energy mandates, and an aging workforce heading into retirement. If you are weighing which skilled trade to pursue, this comparison breaks down the key differences.

    Training and Licensing Requirements

All three trades follow a similar progression -- education, apprenticeship, journeyman license, and optional master license -- but the timelines and specifics differ:

    • Electricians: Most apprenticeships last four to five years (8,000-10,000 hours), combining on-the-job training with 144+ hours of classroom instruction annually. Licensing requirements vary by state but typically include passing a journeyman exam after completing an apprenticeship. The National Electrical Code (NEC) forms the backbone of all exams.
    • Plumbers: Apprenticeships generally run four to five years as well, with a strong emphasis on code compliance, blueprint reading, and safety. Journeyman and master plumber licenses require passing state-specific exams, and many states mandate continuing education credits.
    • HVAC Technicians: HVAC programs can be shorter, with many community colleges and trade schools offering six-month to two-year certificate or associate degree programs. EPA Section 608 certification is federally required for anyone handling refrigerants. Apprenticeships are available but not always mandatory, making HVAC a faster entry point into a trade career.

For a detailed look at how to enter any of these trades, see our guide on apprenticeship programs and high-paying trade careers.

    Day-to-Day Work

What you actually do on the job varies significantly:

    • Electricians install, maintain, and repair electrical systems in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. Work involves reading blueprints, running conduit and wire, installing panels and outlets, and troubleshooting circuit faults. Commercial and industrial electricians frequently work at heights and in confined spaces.
    • Plumbers install and repair piping systems for water supply, drainage, and gas lines. The work is physically demanding -- crawling under houses, cutting through walls, and working in trenches. Emergency calls for burst pipes or sewer backups mean irregular hours are common.
    • HVAC Technicians install, service, and repair heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems. Work is seasonal in many regions, with peak demand in summer and winter. Technicians spend time on rooftops, in attics, and in mechanical rooms, and the work requires both electrical and mechanical aptitude.

    Salary and Earning Potential

While median wages provide a useful benchmark, top earners in each trade significantly exceed those numbers:

    • Electricians: The top 10 percent earn over $104,180. Specializing in industrial controls, renewable energy installations, or fire alarm systems can push earnings higher. Master electricians who run their own businesses often gross well above six figures.
    • Plumbers: The top 10 percent earn over $101,190. Master plumbers and those who specialize in commercial construction or medical gas piping command premium rates. Running a plumbing business can be extremely lucrative in high-demand markets.
    • HVAC Technicians: The top 10 percent earn over $86,520. Specialization in commercial refrigeration, building automation systems, or geothermal installations increases earning potential. HVAC professionals with NATE (North American Technician Excellence) certification tend to earn 5-10 percent more.

Use the trade salary calculator to compare earnings by trade, experience level, and location.

    Job Outlook and Demand

The BLS projects employment growth through 2032 of 11 percent for electricians (much faster than average), 6 percent for plumbers, and 6 percent for HVAC technicians. Electricians benefit especially from the surge in green energy projects, including solar panel installations, EV charging infrastructure, and battery storage systems. Plumbers and HVAC technicians see steady demand from both new construction and the replacement of aging systems in existing buildings.

Which Trade Is Right for You?

Consider these factors when making your decision:

    • If you enjoy problem-solving with electrical systems and want the highest long-term earning ceiling, electrical work is likely your best bet.
    • If you prefer tangible, hands-on work and do not mind physically demanding conditions, plumbing offers strong pay and business ownership potential.
    • If you want the fastest entry point and enjoy working with both mechanical and electrical systems, HVAC provides a quicker path to earning.

No matter which trade you choose, the demand for skilled workers makes all three paths financially rewarding. Browse current openings across all trades on Workzil and use our trade certification guide to map out your credential roadmap.
