How to Write a Resume for Blue Collar Jobs

    March 18, 2026

Most resume advice online is written for office workers. But if you are applying for construction, manufacturing, warehouse, maintenance, or trade jobs, a traditional corporate resume format can actually work against you. According to a 2023 study by Indeed, 72% of hiring managers in skilled trades said they prioritize certifications and hands-on experience over education and career summaries. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that there are over 30 million blue collar workers in the United States, yet surprisingly few resume resources address their specific needs.

    Lead with Certifications and Licenses

In blue collar hiring, certifications are your currency. Place them prominently, either in a dedicated section near the top of your resume or directly below your contact information. Include:

    • Trade licenses: Journeyman or master-level licenses in electrical, plumbing, HVAC, or other trades.
    • Safety certifications: OSHA 10, OSHA 30, forklift certification, confined space entry, fall protection.
    • Industry credentials: CDL (with endorsements), ASE certifications, EPA 608, NABCEP, welding certifications (AWS D1.1, etc.).
    • Equipment proficiencies: Specific machinery, tools, or systems you are qualified to operate.

A hiring manager scanning 50 resumes for a pipe fitter position will immediately look for relevant certifications. If yours are buried at the bottom, they may never see them.

Describe Your Experience in Concrete Terms

Avoid vague descriptions like "responsible for maintenance tasks." Instead, use specific, measurable language:

    • Weak: "Performed electrical work on commercial buildings."
    • Strong: "Installed and maintained electrical systems in 12 commercial properties ranging from 10,000 to 50,000 sq. ft., including panel upgrades, conduit runs, and fire alarm systems."
    • Weak: "Operated warehouse equipment."
    • Strong: "Operated sit-down and stand-up forklifts, pallet jacks, and reach trucks in a 200,000 sq. ft. distribution center processing 500+ orders daily."

Numbers, square footage, crew sizes, production volumes, and equipment specifications all help hiring managers quickly assess your experience level. For more examples and templates tailored to specific trades, check out our blue collar resume pack.

    Highlight Reliability and Safety Record

In blue collar industries, reliability is often valued as highly as technical skill. Employers dealing with tight project deadlines and physical work environments need people who show up consistently and work safely. If applicable, include:

    • Attendance record or years of perfect attendance.
    • Safety record, such as "zero incidents across 3 years and 5,000+ hours on active job sites."
    • Willingness to work overtime, weekends, or rotating shifts (if true and relevant to the position).
    • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation, which is a genuine differentiator for many field-based roles.

Formatting Tips for Blue Collar Resumes

Keep your resume clean and scannable. Many blue collar hiring managers are reviewing resumes on job sites or their phones, not printed on paper:

    • Length: One page is ideal for under 10 years of experience. Two pages maximum for extensive careers.
    • Format: Use a simple, single-column layout. Avoid graphics, columns, or fancy formatting that may not display correctly on all devices or applicant tracking systems.
    • Font: Stick with standard fonts like Arial, Calibri, or Times New Roman at 10 to 12 point size.
    • File type: Submit as a PDF unless the employer specifically requests a Word document.

Workzil's resume checker can evaluate your blue collar resume for ATS compatibility and suggest improvements based on the specific role you are targeting.

    What to Leave Off

Blue collar resumes do not need:

    • An objective statement (these are outdated across all industries).
    • References listed on the resume (bring them separately if asked).
    • Every job you have ever held. Focus on the last 10 to 15 years of relevant experience.
    • Hobbies or personal interests, unless they are directly relevant (e.g., woodworking for a carpentry position).

    Key Takeaways

    • Lead with certifications and licenses. They are the first thing blue collar hiring managers look for.
    • Use concrete numbers: square footage, crew sizes, equipment types, and production volumes make your experience tangible.
    • Emphasize reliability, safety records, and physical availability. These qualities matter enormously in trades and labor roles.
    • Keep formatting simple and ATS-friendly. A clean, one-page PDF beats a flashy design every time.
