What a salary calculator does
A salary calculator turns three inputs — role, location, and experience — into a salary band (typically expressed as 10th-to-90th percentiles). The strongest calculators also model take-home pay by applying federal tax brackets, FICA, and state-specific income tax to the median number. Salary calculators are most useful for negotiation prep, offer evaluation, and cross-state comparisons.
Most public salary calculators rely on one of three data sources: the Bureau of Labor Statistics (government wage survey, free and authoritative), employee self-reports (Glassdoor, Levels.fyi — useful for big-tech total comp but biased by who chooses to report), or proprietary employer pay-data licences.
